2021 P3 Expo - Microwave-Catalytic Membrane for PFAS Degradation

New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ

New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ P3 Team

The video below showcases our updated results from this project activities including major experimental findings and student participation. Specifically, this video will demonstrate the principles and chemical reaction mechanisms of microwave catalysis that takes place on the membrane surface. The results of PFAS degradation kinetics are discussed under different reaction conditions.

This project will embark on an innovative microwave-assisted membrane filtration (MWM) system that combines microwave catalysis and microfiltration to enhance the removal of PFOA and PFOS (two model Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances or PFASs). The project will examine (1) the production of Nanobubbles and hydroxyl radicals on catalyst-coated membrane surface under microwave irradiation; (2) the potency of pollutant degradation and antifouling performances under microwave irradiation, including the analysis of degradation by-products and water matrix effects (e.g., presence of dissolved organic matters or high salinity).
