2021 P3 Expo - Solar-Energy-Combined Desalination Systems

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK P3 Team

The video provides the proposed research project that will investigate the desalination via combinational research of ceramic membranes and solar evaporation to facilitate the reuse of brackish groundwater. By applying the proposed technique, we expect to treat brackish water to a level suitable for re-use (like for agricultural purposes). Moreover, the proposed approach is a cost-effective method for water treatment.

Our team consist of one PhD students (Diako Mahmodi, Chemical Engineering) and two undergraduate students (Aaron Austin, Physics and Alex Bias, Physics). Dr. Seokjhin Kim (PI, Chemical Engineering), Dr. David McIlroy (Co-PI, Physics), and Dr. Clint Aichele (Co-PI, Chemical Engineering) lead the project.

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK P3 Team Poster

Our poster describes our proposed activities and progress to date. The team proposes to develop a novel cost-effective solar evaporation and tailored ceramic membranes, which provides an opportunity to separate salts, oils, greases and other pollutants from brackish groundwater in a more energy efficient manner in comparison with the current treatment technologies. The team have investigated the desalination via combinational research of process design, solar evaporation, and ceramic membranes to facilitate the reuse of brackish groundwater in cost-effective way.
