Emergency Preparedness and Response Requirements
To reduce exposure risks to people who may be near a buffer zone, soil fumigant pesticide applicators are required to either provide on-site monitoring of the perimeter, or provide emergency response information directly to neighbors.
-
Soil Fumigant Labels
The 2012 updated pesticide labels include new safety requirements for buffer zones and related measures. Find labels for each different type of fumigant: chloropicrin, dazomet, dimethyl disulfide, metam sodium/potassium, and methyl bromide.
-
Presentations on Soil Fumigation Requirements - PDF Format
These provide training, outreach, and other resource materials for applicators and handlers, communities, state and local agencies, and others interested in understanding and implementing the current requirements for safe use of soil fumigant pesticides.
-
Soil Fumigant Fact Sheet Compilation
These cover information about buffer zones and the sign posting requirements, fumigant management plans, certified pesticide applicators and handlers, and resources for tribal and state lead agencies (SLAs) and residents of agricultural communities.
-
Safety Information for Handlers of Pesticide Soil Fumigants
Certified applicators are required to provide this training to handlers in an application block or buffer zone. Information must include signs and symptoms of exposure, and where to find the Fumigant Management Plan and Worker Protection Standard.
-
Soil Fumigant Labels - Dazomet
Updated labels include new safety requirements for buffer zones and related measures. Find information from the Pesticide Product Labeling System (PPLS) for products such as Basamid G, manufactured by Amvac.
-
Paladin® EC (Dimethyl Disulfide, DMDS) Fumigant Safe Handling Guide
Certified pesticide applicators are required to provide safety information to handlers working in an application block or buffer zone, including instruction on personal protective equipment, air monitoring, respiratory protection, and exposure mitigation.
-
Presentations on Fumigant Requirements
These provide training, outreach, and other resource materials for applicators and handlers, communities, state and local agencies, and others interested in understanding and implementing the current requirements for safe use of soil fumigant pesticides.
-
Paladin® (Dimethyl Disulfide, DMDS) Fumigant Safe Handling Guide
This liquid pre-plant soil fumigant pesticide poses potential exposure risk concerns, so the product label and Fumigant Management Plan (FMP) address personal protective equipment, air monitoring, and respiratory protection.
-
Metam Sodium and Metam Potassium Fumigant Safe Handling Guide
Safety training is required for certified pesticide applicators and handlers to handle soil fumigants. Measures to mitigate exposure include personal protective equipment, air monitoring, respiratory protection, and emergency preparedness.
-
Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) Fumigant Management Plan Template Phase 2
These templates provide a framework for developing your FMP, including sections on your supervising pesticide applicator, buffer zones, emergency response plan, handler information, tarp plan, soil conditions, signage, and air monitoring plan.
-
Fact Sheet on Measures Required to Protect Workers from Fumigant Exposures
These safety measures increase protections for fumigant handlers and other agricultural workers and bystanders from exposure to the soil fumigant pesticides chloropicrin, dazomet, metam sodium, metam potassium, and methyl bromide.
-
Buffer Zone Sign Template
The certified pesticide applicator is required to post a comparable sign, designating a buffer zone around the soil fumigant application block in order to control exposure risk. It must include the "don't walk" symbol, product name, and applicator contact.
-
Buffer Zone Fact Sheets
New requirements for buffer zones and sign posting contribute to soil fumigant mitigation and protection for workers and bystanders. The buffer provides distance between the pesticide application site and bystanders, reducing exposure risk.
-
Chloropicrin Fumigant Management Plan Phase 2 Templates
These forms provide a framework for detailing the FMP elements of pesticide products containing the active ingredient chloropicrin, including application block, buffer zones, emergency response plan, tarp plan, soil conditions, and air monitoring.
-
Chloropicrin and 1,3-D Fumigant Management Plan Phase 2 Templates
Plans for soil fumigant pesticide products that contain chloropicrin or 1,3-dichloropropene should include application block information, tarp plan, sign posting for treated area and buffer zone, and other requirements.
-
1,3-Dichloropropene and Chloropicrin Combination Products Fumigant Safe Handling Guide
These soil fumigant pesticide products' labels require safety training according to the Worker Protection Standard WPS. Steps to mitigate exposure include air monitoring, respiratory protection, and proper tarp perforation and removal.
-
Dazomet Fumigant Management Plan Phase 2 Templates
These templates provide a framework for reporting application block information, buffer zones, emergency response plan, tarp plan, soil conditions, air monitoring, and more for pesticide products containing the active ingredient dazomet, such as Basamid G.
-
Film Permeability Determination Using Static Permeability Cells
The permeability of tarps to soil fumigant pesticides varies depending on the active ingredient chemical: dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), methyl bromide, chloropicrin, or other. The diffusion rate can be represented by the mass transfer coefficient (MTC).
-
Dazomet Fumigant Safe Handling Guide
Dazomet is the active ingredient in Basamid G soil fumigant pesticide. Wear personal protective equipment such as respirators when handling Basamid granules or making an application, mitigate exposures, and recognize signs of vapor inhalation.
