Climate Change Impacts
Climate change is projected to reduce the availability and affordability of nutritious food, particularly in rural communities that rely on agriculture, fishing, or subsistence lifestyles.
Disruptions to food systems and supply chains are expected to increase with climate change. These disruptions are projected to make some food items more expensive and less accessible, particularly for individuals and households living below the federal poverty line, including those in rural areas.
Impacts on Children’s Health
- As of 2020, over 30% of children in Hawaii were estimated to live in a food-insecure household.1
- Research has shown a link between food insecurity and risk of chronic illnesses like asthma or anemia.2
- Children who are at nutritional risk have been found to have decreased academic performance and more behavioral problems.3
