Multisystem Search User Guide

Before you begin searching Envirofacts (EF), it is helpful to gather the following information about the business, chemical, or neighborhood you are researching. Although you can search with less information, the search will be faster and yield more precise results if you have the following:

  • Business, city, county names, ZIP Codes, and/or state names.
  • Facility Industrial Classification codes (SIC or NAICS) are classifications for the organizations you are researching. These codes are assigned to industries and businesses by the federal government through the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Search Tips For Better Results

  • Gather information in advance.
  • Understand which data fields are available.
  • Review metadata for critical definitions.
  • Use filters to limit broad searches.
  • Save search criteria for reuse.

Facility Selection Option

Use the Facility Name field to find facilities by name.

  • Enter a complete name for precise matching.
  • Enter a partial name if unsure.
  • Select “Containing” for broader results.

Geography Search Option

Select from the following geographical search options: ZIP Code, Address, City, County, and State.

ZIP Code

Enter a full five-digit ZIP Code. ZIP+4 formats are also supported.

Address

Enter a complete or partial street address.

City

Enter a complete or partial city name. State selection is required.

County

Enter a complete or partial county name.  State selection is required.

State

Select a state name from the dropdown list. The list is alphabetical by state name followed by territories.

Note: Begin with small geographic areas for faster load times. Envirofacts contains a large number of facilities, and broad searches may require more time to process.

Tribal Search Option

Use this option to locate facilities on or near Tribal lands.

Search for facilities on or near any Tribe in the area

Select a distance from the dropdown list to identify facilities located within or near Tribal land. Combine this filter with geographic criteria for more refined results.

Search for facilities on or near a specific Tribe

Choose from:

  • Tribes in the continental U.S.
  • Alaska Native Villages

The dropdown provides a list of Tribes. Then, select a distance buffer (On Tribal Land, 1, 3, or 10 miles) for the Tribal location.

Important Notes:

  • EPA makes no claims regarding the accuracy or precision of data concerning Indian country locations or boundaries on the Envirofacts website.
  • The Indian country locations shown here are suitable only for general spatial reference and do not necessarily reflect EPA's position regarding any Indian country locations or boundaries or the land status of any specific location.
  • EPA uses U.S. Census Bureau tribal boundary layer data when developing environmental data query responses for tribes in the lower 48 United States.
  • Locations may not precisely represent legal boundaries or land status.
  • For authoritative information, refer to the original EPA program metadata associated with the Tribal datasets.

Facility Industrial Classification Search Option

Search for facilities by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code or North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code industrial codes.

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code Search

Enter a partial or full 2–4 digit SIC code.

  • “Exact Match” requires a 4‑digit code
  • “Beginning With” and “Containing” accept partial codes

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code

Enter a partial or full 4–6 digit NAICS code.

  • “Exact Match” supports 4–6 digits
  • “Beginning With” and “Containing” support up to 6 digits

NAICS codes provide greater detail with each additional digit (sector → subsector → industry group → industry).

Envirofacts Search Results

The search will produce a Multisystem Report for the entered location which displays:

  • The location you entered
  • An interactive map of the location which displays the facilities reporting to EPA.
  • A table of the facilities in the location along with links to view program system detailed reports about each facility.
  • A Summary Report link – this links to a facility detail report that shows the Envirofacts program systems associated with the facility.
  • A Facility Report link – this links to the Facility Registry System (FRS) report that shows the FRS program systems associated with the facility.
  • A Compliance Report link – this links to the Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) Facility Report.
  • Options to copy, print, or export the table results in CSV, Excel, or JSON format.
