Cleanup Status
Note: The EPA is the lead agency for managing cleanups at this facility.
On September 26, 2017, EPA issued a Final Decision for Corrective Action for the Former Dana Corporation facility. The Final Remedy consists of implementation of the institutional controls through an enforceable environmental covenant that require compliance with land and groundwater use restrictions. The environmental covenant is being developed by PADEP and EPA. Currently, there is a notice in the property deed which restricts the land use of the property to non-residential. Groundwater use at the facility is prohibited by municipal ordinance. The Final Remedy is applicable to the entire facility excluding Lots 6 and 7.
The facility completed site remediation under the Pennsylvania Act 2 program in 2007. A small portion of the property (Lots 6 and 7) will be reused for condominium, and the remaining portion of the property is currently owned by Carpenter Tech for industrial use.
On September 22, 2023, EPA determined the facility was ready for anticipate use. Cleanup goals have been achieved current and reasonably anticipated future land uses of the facility so there are no unacceptable risks.

The Dana Corporation - Parish Division (Dana) site is located at Robeson and Weiser Streets in the City of Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Dana has occupied portions of the property since the 1920s. The Site is approximately 50 acres. The site was formerly utilized for the manufacture and assembly of automobile and truck frames. On-site activities included steel cutting, steel pressing, steel shaping, and coating and painting. All production at the facility was suspended in September 2000.
Contaminants at this Facility
Soil investigations showed that Ethylbenzene, Carbon tetrachloride, lead, thallium, and PCBs were detected at concentrations above the EPA Region 3 Non-residential direct contact Regional Screening Levels (RSLs). Soils contaminated with PCBs were remediated to the Act 2 Statewide Health Standard of 30 mg/kg. Groundwater investigations showed that TCE, PCE, benzene, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, cadmium, and lead were detected at concentrations exceeding the respective MCLs.
Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility
Institutional Controls restrict the use of groundwater as long as contaminants of concern are above minimum levels of acceptability. Also land use is restricted to non-residential purposes on all areas except lot 6 and 7 (which have no use restrictions since there were no documented hazardous waste released in these areas
