Ansul Inc. is currently conducting corrective actions under a 2009 Administrative Order on Consent with the US EPA. The Order requires Tyco to implement institutional controls, soil remediation, sediment removal from the Menominee River, and on-site groundwater management.

Location:  1 Stanton St, Marinette, WI
Property Area:  63 acres
Other Names:  Tyco Safety Products
Cleanup Status:
Human Exposures under Control:  Yes, controlled

Last Update:  2/2017

Cleanup Status

Many parts of the remedy required by the 2009 Order were completed by Tyco. The facility used soil covers to prevent exposures where on-site soils exceed 32 mg/kg total arsenic. Off-site soils were corrected to or below 16 mg/kg total arsenic.  Tyco also removed, treated, and properly disposed of 300,000 cubic yards of soft sediment and semi-consolidated materials above 20 mg/kg total arsenic from the Menominee River.  Tyco installed a barrier made of sheet pile and a slurry wall around the entire facility border to contain arsenic-polluted groundwater on-site.

Tyco is minimizing the chances for sediment re-contamination in the River. They are re-lining, replacing, or removing parts of their storm water sewer and industrial sewer systems to prevent groundwater penetration into the outfall system.  In two areas of the Site, the former Salt Vault and the 8th Street Slip, Tyco is pumping groundwater levels below the height of the Menominee River to prevent groundwater leaking through the containment wall.  As part of long-term monitoring,

  • Tyco regularly determines the condition of the perimeter containment walls,
  • Will test for leaks through the containment wall in the Main Plant with a dye injection test, and
  • Will re-sample sediments in the Menominee River to show that the remedy is effective.
