2021 P3 Expo - Perstraction for the Removal of PFAs from Water

Miami University, Oxford, OH

Miami University, Oxford, OH P3 Team

The video below provides the motivation, definition, and approach to developing and assessing a novel membrane-assisted liquid-liquid extraction method for removing PFAs from water. The students have used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes with and without imbedded nanoparticles to characterize both solvent and PFOA uptake by the membrane. A preliminary test system is shown to provide an example of how we plan to run future assessments and demonstrations of this novel process.

The project team consists of 4 students from Miami University: Megan Flood (Chemical Engineering), Sean Chen (Bioengineering), Ryan Armstrong (Bioengineering), and Chris Marcellino (Bioengineering). The project advisor is Dr. Catherine Almquist

The project poster provides the motivation, definition, and approach to developing and assessing a novel membrane-assisted liquid-liquid extraction method for removing PFAs from water. The students have used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes with and without imbedded nanoparticles to characterize both solvent and PFOA uptake by the membrane. A test system that is currently under construction is shown to provide an example of how we plan to run future assessments and demontrations of this novel process. Various analytical methods have been and will be applied in efforts to support the experimental data and observations.
