EPA Extends Public Comment Period for Wappinger Creek Superfund Site Cleanup Proposal
NEW YORK - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is extending the public comment period for its proposed cleanup plan at the Wappinger Creek Superfund Site in Dutchess County, New York. The comment period, originally scheduled to end August 21, 2026, will now remain open until September 21, 2026. EPA is extending the comment period at the request of the community.
The proposed cleanup plan remedy focuses on the upper portion of the site, targeting the removal of contaminated sediment and soil to prevent downstream migration of mercury and to restore affected areas. This action will allow EPA to begin addressing contamination at the site. EPA will monitor conditions after the work is completed to confirm the effectiveness of this remedy and will use the results to guide a final remedy decision for the site at a later date.
EPA held a public meeting on July 30, 2026 to provide an overview of the cleanup proposal and answer community questions. The presentation from that meeting, along with additional background and site documents is available on the Wappinger Creek Superfund site profile page.
