Puerto Rico Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10) Study

Between June 2023 and March 2024, EPA conducted air monitoring study in Guayama and Salinas, Puerto Rico. The study was conducted with community input on where to place the equipment. EPA used real-time sensors to measure particulate matter or dust with a diameter of 2.5 or 10 microns (PM2.5 and PM10) and meteorology. EPA also analyzed the composition of PM10 at one site.  

The results of the study found that air quality was generally in the “Good” category based on EPA’s Air Quality Index. Sea salt, soil components associated to the earth’s crust, particulate matter resulting from coal emissions, coal ash, and the combustion of diesel and oil were identified as part of the materials that contribute to PM10 composition.    

On August 14, 2025, EPA held a follow-up in-person community meeting at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico in Guayama to update and inform on the study’s progress and preliminary results. Access the presentation slides and fact sheets below:

Entre junio de 2023 y marzo de 2024, la Agencia Federal de Protección Ambiental (“EPA”, por sus siglas en inglés) realizó un estudio de monitoreo del aire en Guayama y Salinas, Puerto Rico. El estudio se realizó con el asesoramiento de la comunidad sobre dónde colocar el equipo. La EPA utilizó sensores en tiempo real para medir material particulado o polvo fugitivo con un diámetro de 2.5 o 10 micrones (PM2.5 y PM10) y meteorología. La EPA también analizó la composición de PM10 en una localización.  

Los resultados del estudio encontraron que la calidad del aire estaba generalmente en la categoría de “Bueno” según el Índice de Calidad del Aire de la EPA. La sal marina, componentes del suelo asociado a la corteza terrestre, y particulado proveniente de las emisiones de la combustión de carbón, las cenizas de carbón, de diésel y petróleo se identificaron como parte de los materiales contribuyentes a la composición de PM10.    

El 14 de agosto de 2025, la EPA celebró una reunión comunitaria presencial de seguimiento en la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico en Guayama para informar sobre el progreso y resultado preliminar del estudio.
