Dr. Sams is the Deputy Director of the Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure. He has over 20 years of experience in toxicology and human health risk assessment of environmental pollutants and management. He has previously served as the Deputy Chief Financial Officer at the Bureau of Fiscal Service (US Treasury), and as a Senior Science Advisor, Deputy Division Director, and Branch Chief at the the former National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) within the Office of Research and Development. 

Dr. Sams has contributed to or led the development of numerous human health risk assessments including Integrated Risk Information System and Integrated Science Assessments. He was a primary lead for the development of risk assessment training within NCEA and has worked collaboratively with the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council to develop training courses for state and local organizations within the United States.

Internationally, Dr. Sams has participated in the development and review of human health-related documents including International Agency for Research on Cancer monographs (Monograph 100C) and the World Health Organization /International Programme on Chemical Safety Guidance for Immunotoxicity Risk Assessment for Chemicals. He also has 35 years of experience as a farmer and currently manages a cattle farm near Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
