BMDS Online Desktop and PyBMDS Release History
Starting with version 25.1, BMDS uses calendar versioning, where the first two digits corresponds to the year of release (i.e., 25 for a 2025 release) and the following number is incremented for each release of the calendar year, starting at 1. So, version 25.1 corresponds to the first release of BMDS in 2025.
Prior to version 25.1, BMDS Online release IDs reflect the year and month of release. A release ID of "2023.01" signifies that the update was released in January 2023.

Released December 2025
The December 2025 update (version 25.2) to pybmds added several new features and enhancements, including:
- Cochran Armitage trend test for dichotomous data
- Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test for continuous data
- Additional plotting functionality for nested dichotomous data
- Changed restriction for rho parameter in non-constant variance model to allow negative values
- Ability to count all parameters in a model automatically for the purpose of calculating AIC and p-values.
Note: only pybmds is being updated to version 25.2; BMDS Online and Desktop still use version 25.1, which was last updated in April 2025.

Released April 2025
The April 2025 update (version 25.1) to BMDS Online, BMDS Desktop, and pybmds boasts several new features and enhancements:
- Addition of the NCTR nested dichotomous model for nested developmental toxicity data; the NCTR model was last available in BMDS in version 2.7
- Addition of the Rao-Scott transformation tool that allows users to approximate the intralitter correlation for nested developmental data when only summary level data are available
- Ability to clone an analysis when sharing modeling results with colleagues; cloning an analysis allows recipients of dose-response modeling results to copy and modify an analysis without altering the original analysis
- Multiple enhancements and under-the-hood fixes to improve efficiency, error handling, and stability for future development
This interim release also rolls out an online version of the BMDS User Guide, replacing the previous PDF version.
2024.1
Released November 2024
The 2024 BMDS Online upgrade introduces two new products to the BMDS Suite of applications:
- BMDS Desktop is a Python-based version of BMDS Online that runs offline in a web browser and replaces the Excel-based BMDS 3.3. It is intended for users with increased data privacy or sensitivity concerns that prevent them from being able to run BMD analyses on EPA infrastructure.
- pybmds enables users to run dose-response analyses in a scripting environment, along with running high-throughput or batch analyses of thousands of individual datasets. pybmds is a command-line application and is intended for the advanced user with some development experience.
The BMDS User Guide has been updated for the 2024 release and describes the key features and differences between the three products. While the User Guide can serve as complete documentation for both the BMDS Online and BMDS Desktop interfaces, pybmds is a command-line application with its own online documentation. The online documentation also describes in detail how to install BMDS Desktop and pybmds.
All improvements and enhancements listed below are available in BMDS Online, BMDS Desktop, and pybmds:
- Addition of Multistage Cancer/Multitumor model, along with a poly-k trend test
- Addition of the Nested Logistic nested dichotomous model for developmental toxicity data
- BMDS model source code is available via GitHub
- Enhancements and under-the-hood fixes to improve efficiency, error handling, and stability for future development
