Adaptation Action Stories

Learn more about adaptation and resilience work taking place on the ground through our Adaptation Action Stories. Each story is associated with a project that received either financial or technical assistance from EPA and highlights why prioritizing climate resilience was important for the community.

The lessons learned may be applicable in similar towns/cities/regions for adaptation practitioners, local and state governments, organizations that assist in adaptation action, and other interested community members.

Summary: Wildfire, drought, water scarcity, and extreme heat increasingly threaten food security in the economically challenged region of Grant County, New Mexico. To make the local soil more resilient to drought and to increase food security, the community in Silver City galvanized partnerships to create composting systems to restore soil health.

Summary: In April 2022, many parts of Durban, South Africa were devastated by torrential rains and flooding, causing damages that  included not only major financial losses to the city and its residents, but also brought intense emotional and physical trauma to its survivors.
