EPA's Locating and Selecting Scenarios Online (LASSO) tool was developed to provides alternate approaches for systematically selecting and then downloading a set of climate change projections that are best suited for a given research question or objective.

The advantages and disadvantages of these approaches are described in the tool, and generally depend on the tradeoff between including more (lower risk tolerance) or fewer (less information to process) climate projections. The LASSO tool streamlines the selection process by guiding users through a step-by-step procedure of first building a scatterplot to visualize the variability of climate change projections, then assisting the user in identifying the projections that can address their specific concerns or questions.

The tool provides access to climate change projections pre-processed for all ten EPA Regions, each of the contiguous United States, two emissions scenarios, and summarized both annually and seasonally. Users will have the option to download maps, figures, and GIS-ready spatial data, or use an interactive scatterplot widget to further customize their selections.

History of LASSO

Below is a list of important milestones to LASSO.

Date Milestone
Sep 2020 EPA released the supporting document, A Systematic Approach for Selecting Climate Projections to Inform Regional Impact Assessments.
Oct 2019 LASSO was incorporated into the Global Climate Explorer set of tools and website.
Nov 2018 EPA released the LASSO interactive tool.
