EPA Support

Whether you are an applicant or recipient, you will be supported by EPA specialists at each step of the grant lifecycle. This includes providing training and resources on various grants related topics such as navigating Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs), access to experienced grants personnel who provide technical and administrative issues throughout the life of the award, Regional specific support, and training on grants related concepts.

Project Officer (PO):

EPA grant Project Officers (POs) are primarily responsible for the technical and programmatic oversight of assistance agreements, acting as the primary liaison between the EPA and the recipient. Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitors and tracks all activities including project progress to ensure work is completed and approved in the workplan and application;
  • Can conduct both planned and unannounced site visits to monitor compliance which can include facility walkthroughs, record reviews, and sample collection;
  • Review progress reports to ensure accuracy, compliance, and achievement of project goals before final approval;
  • Provide technical assistance to the recipient;
  • Respond to questions or concerns raised by the Grant Specialist (GS);
  • Ensures compliance with the terms and conditions of the award;
  • Maintain documentation and records over the lifespan of the grant which can include correspondence between the recipient and EPA, and any decisions made.

Grant Specialist (GS):

EPA Grant Specialists (GS) are involved from day one of the award, often acting as the focal point for administrative issues. Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and communicating with the Project Officer (PO and Program Offices): 
  • Providing administrative management of the grant which includes reviewing base-line reports and funding documentation;
  • Reviews and approves amendments to grant awards. 

Regions

EPA has 10 Regional offices; each is responsible for the implementation of programs and helps support offices with a geographic focus. Regional offices support all 50 states and territories, working with recipients ranging from federal and state partners to Tribal partners and citizen entities. 

Each Region provides individualized training and resources specific to their programs and communities. These can include but are not limited to providing webinars and training materials, releasing news on regional topics, providing newsletters, and supporting Regional Tribal Operations Committees (RTOC).

Training:

EPA provides training through multiple forms of media, the most frequent being webinars. Webinars are hosted periodically throughout the calendar year and cover a rage of grant related topics that include but are not limited to participant support costs, terms and conditions, the closeout process, fraud awareness and prevention, and financial management. 

Webinars are open to all entities interested in learning more about EPA grants, new and returning EPA grants applicants, and new and seasoned recipients.
