Cleanup Activities
The EPA is the lead agency for cleanups at this facility.
EPA evaluated current groundwater monitoring data and other environmental investigative data gathered during the implementation of the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) Voluntary Clean up Program (VCP) Response Action Plan (April 2010) activities and the MDE Oil Clean up Program investigative/remediation activities
On June 2, 2021 the EPA determined corrective action performance standards with controls have been attained at the entire facility. These controls restrict land and and groundwater use and are given in the Corrective Action Final Decision and Response to Comments document.

In the 1940s, the National Plastic Products Company constructed the facility building. The facility was purchased by Ametech, Inc. in 1977. The site was sold to the Ketema in 1988. From 1996 - 2001, Specialty Filaments, Inc. (SFI) acquired and operated the Ketema Corporation facility and the facility's name changed to SFI Odenton Plant . Operations at the SFI Odenton Plant included extruding plastic into threads and fibers used in various products. The existing warehouse was sold to Intercontinental Export Import, Inc. (IEI), and was used for storage of plastic pellets and recyclable plastic products. The building was purchased in 2008 by StonebridgeCarras LLC (StonebridgeCarras), and is being considered for new development. Under the VCP RAP, in the Spring of 2012 StonebridgeCarras demolished the warehouse building structure, except the slab floor and partial basement. Also in the Fall of 2012 the floor was back filled with soil.
An underground diesel release occurred on the neighboring International Paper facility, which resulted in petroleum-impacted soil and groundwater contamination. Risks posed by this contaminant release are being addressed by the International Paper facility.
Elevated concentrations of volatile organic compounds in sub-slab vapors were discovered beneath the southern portion of the building. A blower vents the vapors from under the slab.
Fill materials containing coal dust and/or coal slag were discovered beneath the southern portion of the building. Concentrations of lead, mercury, and arsenic above MDE Non-Residential Cleanup Standards were detected in the fill soil. The area is capped with concrete.
