Certified Equipment
Section 609 requires that Technicians use refrigerant handling equipment that has been certified by the EPA or an independent standards testing organization approved by EPA to certify equipment. Currently, Intertek(formerly ETL Testing Laboratories, Inc.) and Underwriters Laboratory (UL)are the only independent standards testing organizations approved to certify refrigerant handling equipment.
SAE International maintains a database of MVAC servicing equipment that has been certified to meet SAE J2911 “Procedure for Certification That Requirements for Mobile Air Conditioning System Components, Service Equipment and Service Technician Training Meet SAE J Standards.” EPA does not require compliance with SAE J2911. Equipment meeting the certification standards found in J2911 can be found in SAE’s MAC Manufacturer Database .
