Background:
The BASF North Works facility occupies about 230 acres of land bordering the Detroit River. The site has been used for a variety of industrial operations since the 1800s but is currently used to manufacture chemicals and other products. During an investigation, the EPA and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy identified several contaminants of concern including heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, and PFAS.
As the responsible party, BASF with EPA oversight is developing a thorough short-term remedy to mitigate groundwater impacts, particularly those affecting the Detroit River. BASF proposed a plan to install perimeter barriers and a groundwater capture and treatment system. The EPA expects these measures to be a major component of the final remedy for the site.
