EPA Withdraws Proposal of East 10th Street Site in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, to List of Nation’s Most Contaminated Sites

PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 9, 2022) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it is withdrawing the proposal to list the East 10th Street Superfund Site in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The NPL is the list of hazardous waste sites in the United States eligible for cleanup, financed under the federal Superfund program. Instead, EPA is transferring oversight of the cleanup to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), who will continue to ensure the site is properly cleaned up. “EPA and PADEP work closely to clean up contaminated sites so that communities are better protected and can redevelop those sites for economic benefit,” said Adam Ortiz, EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator. “Now that PADEP will be overseeing the cleanup of the East 10th Street Site, EPA can focus essential resources in other places where cleanup of contaminated sites is needed most.” The 36-acre East Tenth Street site is located in an industrial area in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. Site investigations determined that past waste disposal practices, leaking tanks and transformers, and the improper management of asbestos-containing demolition debris contaminated soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. EPA will publish a Federal Register Notice on September 9 announcing the withdrawal of the proposal of this site to the NPL.
