EPA to Hold a Public Hearing in June on its Objection to Ohio’s Proposed Wastewater Discharge Permit for City of Euclid
CHICAGO (May 10, 2022) -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a public comment period and a public hearing scheduled for June 7 and 8 on its objection to the State of Ohio’s proposed wastewater discharge permit for the City of Euclid. The hearing was requested by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and City. The comment period closes June 10.
On November 2, 2021, EPA objected to Ohio EPA’s reissuance of the city’s domestic sewage discharge permit because it does not limit discharges of phosphorus as needed to meet water quality standards for Lake Erie’s central basin. Phosphorus contributes to the formation of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie which are a nuisance and pose risks to public health and aquatic life.
The Clean Water Act provides that EPA may object to a state’s proposed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems permit. The objection stops issuance of the permit until the agencies resolve the issue. After the hearings and consideration of comments, EPA will reaffirm, modify, or withdraw its objection.
The first segment of the hearing will take place in person from 1-4 p.m. on June 7 in Berkman Hall Auditorium at Cleveland State University (1899 East 22nd Street, Cleveland, OH). The second segment will be held virtually from 6-8 p.m. on June 8.
