History and Background
The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Restoration Program (PRP) is designed to restore the ecological health of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin by developing and funding restoration projects and related scientific and public education projects. The PRP was created by the Estuaries and Clean Waters Act of 2000 and is governed by 33 U.S.C. §1273, CWA §121. Statute estimates the Basin to be 10,000 square miles. The Basin is comprised of 16 Louisiana parishes and 4 Mississippi counties (see Map of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin). All PRP projects must occur within the boundaries of the Basin. Congress appropriates PRP funding annually, and the EPA currently awards funds to a pass-through grantee through cooperative agreements.
