On Wednesday, April 30, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a virtual meeting to provide updates on the status of the cleanup at the BASF North Works site in Wyandotte, Michigan.

The meeting will begin with a brief presentation followed by a question and answer session. The EPA will share updates on the cleanup and provide information on the short-term groundwater remedy, which should lessen contaminated groundwater flow into the Trenton Channel of the Detroit River.

Event Details:

When: Wednesday, April 30

Time: 6-7 p.m. EDT

How:  Login instructions will be available on the site’s web page at least two days prior to the event.

Background:

The BASF North Works facility occupies about 230 acres of land bordering the Detroit River. The site has been used for a variety of industrial operations since the 1800s but is currently used to manufacture chemicals and other products. During an investigation, the EPA and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy identified several contaminants of concern including heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, and PFAS.

As the responsible party, BASF with EPA oversight is developing a thorough short-term remedy to mitigate groundwater impacts, particularly those affecting the Detroit River. BASF proposed a plan to install perimeter barriers and a groundwater capture and treatment system. The EPA expects these measures to be a major component of the final remedy for the site.
