ATLANTA (April 29, 2025) – On Tuesday, May 6, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting to introduce the site team members and discuss ongoing investigations and cleanup activities at the Stauffer Chemical Company Cold Creek and LeMoyne Plant Sites (the Sites) in Mobile County, Alabama. EPA representatives will share details about the status of the cleanup activities at the Sites.

When:
Tuesday, May 6, from 6-8 p.m. CDT

Where:
The Sail Building
9618 Old Highway 43
Creola, AL  36525

Background:

The Sites are current and former chemical manufacturing facilities. The Cold Creek Plant Site was used for chemical pesticide manufacturing and was demolished in 2010. Syngenta Crop Protection, LLC currently owns the Cold Creek Plant Site. Nouryon Chemicals, LLC has owned and operated the LeMoyne Plant since 2018. Both Sites were added to the National Priorities List in September 1983.

The Sites are organized into multiple sections called Operable Units (OUs): OU1 (groundwater contamination), OU2 (contaminant source areas), and OU3 (mercury contamination in the Cold Creek Swamp. OU1 and OU3 are common to both Sites. Each Site has its own OU2 to address separate contaminant sources.

With EPA oversight, potentially responsible parties at the Sites are implementing cleanup activities in connection with the selected remedies for each Site. These activities include optimizing the existing groundwater monitoring and extraction systems and additional groundwater characterization efforts for OU1; evaluating and designing the selected remedy for OU2 at the LeMoyne Plant Site; monitoring for Cold Creek Plant OU2; and monitoring and assessment of the Cold Creek Swamp.
