EPA Announces More Than $14 Million in Brownfields Grants to Boost New York Economy, Clean Up Communities

NEW YORK (June 24, 2026) - Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced more than $14 Million in Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment and Cleanup (MAC) grants to accelerate the cleanup of polluted sites across New York. EPA also provided $1.5 Million in supplemental funding to two high-performing Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grantees in New York. With these funds, EPA is investing directly in American communities to cleanup and redevelop blighted properties, delivering on the Trump Administration’s commitment to ensure that clean air, land, and water for goes hand-in-hand with economic growth and opportunity. 

“These Brownfields grants represent a transformative investment in communities throughout New York,” EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. “By supporting local efforts to clean up and revitalize contaminated sites, we’re helping to create healthier neighborhoods, spur economic development, and deliver lasting opportunities for all. This funding empowers our partners to turn challenges into progress, making New York a stronger, greener, and more resilient place for generations to come.”

Clean air, land, and water for all Americans is the first pillar of President Trump and Administrator Zeldin’s Powering the Great American Comeback initiative. These grants put that commitment into action while simultaneously powering economic growth in communities across the country. Selected applications for the 2026 Brownfield Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup Grants funding in Puerto Rico include the following communities:

The Village of Greenwich, NY has been selected to receive $1 million to assess sites and clean up the Dumbarton Site, which was used for textile and paper manufacturing. The grant also supports community engagement activities.

Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to assess abandoned mills, industrial parks, and fuel storage sites. The selectee will use funds to will prioritize sites, develop cleanup plans, and support community activities.

The City of Jamestown, NY has been selected to receive $1 million in funding to assess and clean up sites along the Chadakoin River Corridor, including former furniture and industrial facilities. The grant will also support cleanup, reuse planning, and community engagement.

The City of Johnstown, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to assess a cabinet factory and leather tanneries, inventory sites, develop cleanup plans, and engage the community.

Montgomery County, NY has been selected to receive $1.5 million to assess sites in St. Johnsville, Nelliston, and Amsterdam. Priority sites include abandoned industrial properties, mills, and a cheese production lot. The grant will also support cleanup, reuse plans and community engagement.

The City of New York, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to assess sites in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Priority sites include vacant lots, storage areas, and a former cement plant. 

The Rochester Housing Authority, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to clean up the Former Vogt Manufacturing Site, which was used for metal and machine works. The grant will also support public notifications and engagement.

The City of Rochester, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to assess sites in Inner Loop North and Cliff Street Riverfront neighborhoods, including former dry cleaning, auto repair, brewing, and gas station sites. The grant will also support cleanup, reuse plans, and community engagement.

The Shinnecock Indian Nation, NY has been selected to receive more than $950,000 to assess sites in Southampton, Hampton Bays, and tribal lands, including abandoned residences, beach property, dump sites, and wetlands. The grant will also support cleanup, reuse plans, and community engagement.

The Southern Tier 8 Regional Board, NY has been selected to receive $1.5 million to assess and prioritize sites in Endicott-Johnson, Oneonta, and Ithaca. Priority sites include a former candy factory, shoe factory, railyard, and fire training center. The grant will support cleanup, reuse plans, and community engagement.

The City of Utica, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 to assess sites in Utica’s Central Industrial Corridor, including abandoned industrial facilities and aerospace manufacturing. The grant will also support cleanup plans and community engagement. Utica is also receiving more than $3.8 million to clean up the former Mele Manufacturing site, which was used for knitting goods, jewelry boxes, and coal storage. The grant will also support public meetings and a project webpage.

In addition to the over $12.3 million in funds EPA has awarded in previous years to feed its revolving loan fund, the Niagara County Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) has been selected to receive $1,000,000 in new funds to supplement the Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund to help clean up sites such as the F&M Building and properties in Niagara Falls. The RLF program has successfully made loans or subgrants leading to 21 cleanup projects that are either completed or in progress.

In addition to the $1 million in funds EPA has awarded in previous years, Wayne County, NY has been selected to receive $500,000 in new funds to supplement the Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund for six ongoing or completed cleanup projects, including Canal Street Redevelopment and Caulkin's Tire. Additionally, the grant will support community engagement.

Grant recipients with viable cleanup projects ready for work will help communities continue their work to carry out cleanup and redevelopment projects on contaminated brownfield properties.

EPA’s Brownfields Program began in 1995 and, once these grants are awarded, will have provided over $3 billion in grant funding to assess and clean up contaminated properties and return blighted properties to productive reuse. To date, brownfields investments leveraged more than $45 billion in cleanup and redevelopment. Over the years, the relatively small investment of federal funding was able to leverage, from both public and private sources, more than 228,900 jobs. 

Through fiscal year 2025, on average, $19.47 was leveraged for each EPA Brownfields Grant dollar awarded through multipurpose, assessment, revolving loan fund and cleanup cooperative agreements.

EPA anticipates that it will make these awards once all legal and administrative requirements are satisfied by selected applicants.
