Public Notice: Ralston Superfund Site, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa
Summary
Fifth Five-Year Review Completed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the Fifth Five-Year Review for the Ralston Superfund site. Five-Year Reviews are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-Year Reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the site remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
This Five-Year Review found that the remedy at the site protects human health and the environment in the short-term because engineering- and groundwater-use controls effectively prevent unacceptable exposure to soil and groundwater. The environmental covenant on Rockwell Collins’ property ensures long-term protection by preventing damage or alteration to a portion of the remedy.
To be protective in the long-term, the EPA recommends implementing similar covenants on the two adjacent properties where the disposal area cap overlaps. Additionally, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) sampling should be continued to better characterize its extent.
Site project information and the Five-Year Review are available to the public at web repositories. To view cleanup documents, please visit EPA’s Site Profile page (see Reports and Documents).
