EPA Extends Memorandum of Understanding with Haskell Indian Nations University
LENEXA, KAN. (SEPT. 10, 2026) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. This agreement follows an MOU signed in October 2022 with the university.
The five-year MOU formalizing the partnership was signed on Tuesday, September 8, at an event held on the Haskell campus. EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy and Haskell President Dr. Alex Red Corn signed the MOU.
“Haskell Indian Nations University is a tremendous partner for EPA Region 7,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy. “Together we are promoting student learning, Tribal capacity building, and environmental stewardship. Haskell graduates are making a difference at EPA every day, and we look forward to more opportunities for Haskell students and EPA under this agreement.”
The MOU outlines five areas for collaboration and partnership between EPA Region 7 and Haskell:
1. Employment Preparation: EPA Region 7 and Haskell will endeavor to work together and share information, as appropriate, regarding programs designed for student training, participation, and employment in environmental careers.
2. Technical Assistance: EPA Region 7 and Haskell will consider opportunities to work together on meetings, workshops, and seminars. Haskell will endeavor to serve as a scientific liaison to local communities, including the Regional Tribes, and to serve as a resource to EPA Region 7 and to endeavor to make Haskell faculty affiliates and staff available to EPA Region 7 for seminars, and special events.
3. Mini-Courses/Lectures/Seminar Speakers: EPA Region 7 and Haskell will consider opportunities to inform each other about technical training support that may be offered and of interest to both, including mini-courses, inspection and operator certification courses, lectures, and seminars covering biology, chemistry, engineering, physical science, environmental science, waste disposal and other subjects, based on the unique internal expertise of each party.
4. Mentorship & Career Awareness: As resources allow, EPA Region 7 may provide mentors for high-performing students identified by Haskell staff who are particularly interested in a field of study that is related to EPA’s mission.
5. Collaboration: Haskell and EPA Region 7 will endeavor to coordinate mutually beneficial research priorities as interests and resources allow. This may include Haskell’s participation in research sponsored by EPA Region 7 or collaboration with other EPA offices.
EPA and Haskell have had an MOU in place since 1999.
