Summary

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in agreement with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, has changed the Sauget Area 1 Superfund site cleanup plan. These changes are described in a document called an Explanation of Significant Differences, or ESD. An ESD is required when there are significant, but not fundamental, changes to the original remedy selected in the site’s Record of Decision. The changes to the cleanup plan include:

  • Permanently abandoning a buried section of AT&T’s telecommunications line in the Queeny Avenue industrial corridor in January 2024, and
  • Permanently capping and abandoning a redundant section of Illinois American Water’s water line in the Queeny Avenue industrial corridor at Site I South in March 2024.

The ESD and additional site-related documents are available at Sauget Area 1 webpage.
