EPA OIG FOIA Requests

The basic function of the Freedom of Information Act is to ensure informed citizens, vital to the functioning of a democratic society. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. Federal agencies are required to disclose any information requested under the FOIA unless it falls under one of nine exemptions which protect interests such as personal privacy, national security, and law enforcement.

What are the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act?

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides that any person has a right to obtain access to federal agency records, except to the extent that such records are protected from public disclosure by one of nine exemptions. The Privacy Act of 1974 mandates how federal agencies maintain records about individuals. The law strives to balance the government's need to maintain these records with the individual's right to be protected from unwarranted invasions of personal privacy.

Visit http://www.foia.gov/ to determine if filing a FOIA request is the best option for you.

Reading Room - Guide to Reference Materials

FOIA requires that agencies have a "reading room" to inspect publicly available documents. The OIG reports webpage on this site is available to serve this purpose. FOIAonline provides search functionality for EPA OIG FOIA responsive documents that do not contain first-party protected information.
