Public Notice: EPA proposes cleanup plan to address asbestos contamination at the Illinois Beach Nature Preserve
Summary
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites the public to attend a June 4 public meeting to discuss a proposed cleanup plan to address asbestos contamination within the Illinois Beach Nature Preserve of the Adeline Jay Geo Karis Illinois Beach State Park.
The former Johns Manville Corp. (JM) Superfund Site in Waukegan, Illinois is adjacent to the Illinois Beach Nature Preserve.
EPA’s public meeting will be held Wednesday, June 4, from 6 – 7 p.m., Waukegan City Hall, 2nd Floor Council Chambers, 100 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
At the meeting, EPA staff will discuss the proposed changes to the original cleanup remedy and take public comments. EPA invites the public to comment on the Proposed Plan from May 28 to June 27.
Johns Manville manufactured building products from 1928-1998, some of which contained asbestos. The 350-acre property housed a manufacturing plant, former parking lots, and a disposal area. The company ceased operations in 1998, and the facility was demolished in 2001. The JM site was listed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 1983 to prevent waste materials, including asbestos, chromium, lead, thiram, and xylene, from migrating offsite.
After extensive cleanups, follow-up sampling identified areas of asbestos contamination outside of the JM facility property.
