Advancing atmospheric chemistry to improve air quality and reduce exposure to hazardous air pollutants

EPA Office of Research and Development

EPA National Science Foundation Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) & Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Opportunities

Opportunity Title:

Advancing atmospheric chemistry to improve air quality and reduce exposure to hazardous air pollutants

Research Area:

Air

EPA Lab/Center/Office:

EPA Office of Research and Development, Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling

Location:

Research Triangle Park, NC

Duration:

3 - 12 months

Project Description:

The project focuses on research in atmospheric chemistry to address emerging issues in air pollution and exposure to hazardous air pollutants. One or more of the following research topics could be included: (i) atmospheric modeling of ozone, particulate matter, and hazardous air pollutants, (ii) high time resolution measurements of hazardous air pollutants in the ambient air, and (iii) analysis of measurement data collected in the field or in the atmospheric chamber. All of these research areas are applied to understanding the sources and chemical pathways contributing to air pollution and exposure to hazardous air pollutants. The research will be conducted at EPA’s state-of-science modeling and atmospheric measurement facilities.

Fellowship Goal and Learning Objectives:

Goal:  The fellow will learn and apply modeling techniques, measurement methods, data analysis, or a combination of these to advance the understanding the sources of poor air quality and exposure to hazardous air pollutants.

Learning Objectives:

  • Modeling and measurement of air pollutants to understand their chemical behavior, fate, transport, transformation, and adverse effects on environmental and human health.
  • Conduct experiments, analyze data, and write peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Learn the use and operation of different modeling techniques, analytical instruments, and data analysis methodologies.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong verbal and writing skills,
  • Ability to work both as a part of a team and independently.
  • Basic knowledge of air quality modeling, ambient measurements, or analytical instrumentation

Qualifications:  Graduate student or Ph.D. in one of the relevant fields (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science)

Point of Contact or Mentor:
