Resources for Education and Action for Community Health in Ambler (REACH Ambler)Exit studies the history, environmental health, and community identity of Ambler, Pennsylvania, through a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Through oral history, public history, and science studies, the REACH Ambler project team has collected and explored diverse viewpoints and information from Ambler residents and institutions. This research has helped to develop a variety of interpretive pieces that demonstrate how history can help a community define its present and shape its future.
Temple University Flood Study
Temple University’s Center for Sustainable Communities has developed a Flooding and Stormwater Management Plan for Ambler Area Watersheds (PDF) (106 pp, 19.8 MB, About PDF)Exit, in an effort to mitigate water quality and flooding concerns through identifying and prioritizing stormwater improvements. The three urban watersheds that were examined in this study drain into the Borough of Ambler, and Lower Gwynedd, Whitpain,and Upper Dublin Townships.
The BoRit Asbestos Superfund Site contains some of the Flood Study area, as well as 100-year floodplains. The project has developed an Ambler Area Watershed Study Map and a high-quality GIS database that are available to township engineers and other interest groups.
University of Pennsylvania Asbestos Study
The Penn Superfund Research and Training Program (SRP) Center was awarded a $10 million grant from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences in 2014. Over the next four years the study will examine asbestos exposure pathways that lead to asbestos-related diseases.
The community of primary interest to the Penn SRP is surrounded and potentially impacted by the BoRit Asbestos Superfund Site, which is located in Ambler Borough, and Upper Dublin and Whitpain Townships. This community has a long history of impact from hazardous asbestos waste and the Penn SRP Center seeks to have a significant impact on addressing the concerns of the community through its study.
