Wood-Burning Air Quality Tools, Guidance Documents and Resources

The following wood-burning resources are from EPA, state and local agencies, and partner organizations.

On this page:
  • Air quality tools
  • Resources for State, Local and Tribal officials
  • Health resources
  • Other resources

Air Quality Tools

  • AirData - Provides air pollution data from ambient monitoring and the National Emission Inventory.
  • National Emissions Inventory - EPA estimates of wood-burning emissions at the county level.
  • 2021 Emissions Calculator (xlsx) Use this Excel spreadsheet to estimate emission reductions from wood stove and fireplace changeouts. May not be used for State Implementation Plans (SIPs) and Conformity. Consult your EPA Regional Office or SIP and Conformity guidance documents.
  • Control Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness Table (xlsx) (20.22 KB, February 2015) Use the table to estimate control efficiency and cost effectiveness of various residential wood smoke control measures.

Resources for State, Local and Tribal Officials

  • Guidance for state, local and tribal officials
  • Changeout tribal resources

Health Resources

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Asthma Website - Information on asthma triggers, treatment and management.
  • EPA's AIRNow - Find the air quality forecast for your area.
  • EPA's Asthma Website - Learn which indoor and outdoor environmental factors trigger asthma.
  • EPA's Particle Pollution Website - Basic information about particle pollution, including regulatory actions, trends and research.
    • Particle Pollution and Your Health - Characterizes particle pollution and how it can impact human health and the environment.
  • EPA's Indoor Air Quality Website - Protect the air in your home, school or building.
  • NoAttacks.org - Provides information on asthma triggers.
  • EPA's The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality - A discussion of health effects from wood smoke and ways to reduce exposure.

Other Resources

  • EPA Region 1 Valley Identification Tool - Valleys in New England are especially vulnerable to higher levels of PM2.5 from wood smoke during winter air inversions. This tool identifies populated valleys throughout New England that are at risk for wood smoke pollution. It can be used to better plan air quality monitoring, outreach and mitigation.
  • European Wood-Heating Technology Survey - An overview of combustion principles and the energy and emissions performance of commercially available systems in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
  • Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) - Nonprofit association providing scientific, technical, analytical, and policy support to the air quality programs of the eight Northeast states (CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, and VT).
  • NESCAUM Model Rule - A model rule that state and local agencies can use to regulate hydronic heater emissions.
  • EPA's Air Quality Designations for Particle Pollution - Information about PM2.5 designations for the United States.
  • Washington State Department of Ecology  - Outlines residential burning requirements in WA state.
  • Western States Air Resources Council (WESTAR) - Fifteen northwestern states who discuss western regional air quality issues of common concern and share resources.
