Final National Level Listed Species Biological Evaluation for Simazine

In November  2021, EPA released the final Biological Evaluation (BE) assessing risks to listed species from labeled uses of simazine. The term "listed species" refers to those that are federally listed as endangered or threatened, as well as experimental populations and species that are proposed and candidates for listing. The final BE was conducted according to the Revised Method for National Level Listed Species Biological Evaluations of Conventional Pesticides.

The Revised Method described in this document incorporates:

  • Recommendations from the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS);
  • EPA’s “lessons learned” during the first three pilot BEs;
  • Public comments provided through
    • stakeholder meetings,
    • the docket on the draft BEs for chlorpyrifos, diazinon and malathion, and
    • the docket on the proposed Revised Method;
  • Comments received during consultation with federally recognized tribes; and
  • Input provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service and the US Department of Agriculture.

The final BE for simazine is provided below. The models and tools used to conduct this BE can be found here.

EPA solicited public comments on the draft BE for simazine, which was released in November 2020, and prepared a response to comments document. The response to comments (RTC) on the draft BEs for atrazine, simazine, and glyphosate is provided here:  Response to Comments Document (pdf) (572.32 KB)

  • RTC Attachment 1: Review of toxicity endpoints used in draft BEs (atrazine, simazine and glyphosate)
  • RTC Attachment 2: Results of additional MAGtool runs for atrazine BE
  • RTC Attachment 3: MAGtool files for atrazine
  • RTC Attachment 4: Updated glyphosate estimated environmental concentrations (EECs)
