Conyers, GA: BioLab Fire
EPA Air Monitoring Support
EPA Region 4 is working as part of Unified Command with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Rockdale County and the BioLab company to respond to the fire at the facility in Conyers. EPA is monitoring air quality for chlorine and related compounds. Though the fire has been put out, the EPA will continue to monitor until the material stops smoldering. The odor threshold for chlorine is very low, meaning people can smell it at very low concentrations that do not cause harm.
The EPA has provided Rockdale County with air monitoring results through 5 p.m. on September 30, 2024, to inform decisions around Rockdale County's public protection measures.
EPA Air Monitoring Results
The EPA uses real-time air monitoring instruments to track air quality during an emergency response. The action level for chlorine is 0.5 parts per million (ppm). This level is conservative and protective of the most vulnerable populations, including children.
