Remediation and Restoration Projects for Muskegon Lake AOC

Ruddiman Creek GLLA Sediment Remediation 90,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment was remediated, and 39 acres of wetlands were restored. 2006

Division Street Outfall GLLA Sediment Remediation 43,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment was removed, and a sand cover was placed over an additional 60 acres of lake bottom.  2012

Bear Creek 63.6 acres of wetlands restored. Over 2,000 feet of stream bank restored. In addition to critical habitat restoration, this project also helped mitigate eutrophic conditions through removal of sediment contaminated with harmful levels of phosphorus. 2017

Former Zephyr Oil Refinery GLLA Sediment Remediation 48,870 cubic yards of sediment contaminated with petroleum products and heavy metals was remediated, and 16 acres of wetlands were restored. 2018

Fenner’s Ditch  GLRI funded a feasibility study to address an abandoned, leaking oil well. MDEGLE completed a cap-trap system in 2018 using PRFA funds. 2018

Muskegon Lake Mill Debris Removal 
 

This project restored 19 acres of lake bottom and wetlands habitat through the removal of over 80,000 metric tons of historic mill debris. The slab and sawdust debris are a relic of historic logging activities.

Veterans Memorial Park  Restored 17.4 acres of wetlands and over 6,000 feet of shoreline restoration. This project also hydrologically reconnected critical fish spawning habitat.  2018

Lower Muskegon River  This project will reconnect a former floodplain with the Muskegon River and restore 53.5 acres of emergent wetlands for fish passage and fish and wildlife habitat. 2021

Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve Restoration (MERES)

Project restores and reconnects 7.9 acres of emergent wetlands with Muskegon Lake. Removing approximately 6,331 metric tons of debris/fill.

Restoration of Muskegon Lake at Amoco (Amoco)

Restore approximately 2.7 acres of wetland and 7.6 acres of open water.

Ryerson Creek Great Lakes Legacy Act Sediment Remediation Remove 14,000 cubic yards of petroleum and metal impacted sediments in Muskegon Lake. Project will also soften shorelines, restore wetlands and place residual sand cover to reestablish biota.   2020
