As required by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, EPA is developing battery collection best practices and voluntary battery labeling guidelines to improve battery collection and recycling and reduce incidents that threaten waste management worker safety. EPA is developing battery collection best practices for state, Tribal, and local governments to recycle batteries in a manner that is technically and economically feasible, environmentally sound and safe, and that optimizes value and use of materials, including critical minerals. These forthcoming materials aim to protect the United States’ energy security and help increase American energy dominance, reducing the United States’ dependence on foreign sources.
On March 12, 2025, EPA hosted a virtual report out meeting based on the information shared during the in-person mid-format battery meeting on January 27 and 28, 2025. The virtual report-out attendees included manufacturers; recyclers; trade associations; and state, Tribal, and local governments. For the purposes of these discussions, mid-format batteries are rechargeable batteries between 11 and 25 pounds or 300 to 2000 watt-hour ratings. This includes e-bikes, e-scooters, portable power stations, and outdoor power equipment.
EPA began the virtual report out by sharing key takeaways from the in-person meeting, such as enhancing state and local collection policies, addressing logistics and transportation concerns, and increasing consumer mid-format battery recycling participation. In addition to sharing their views through responses to EPA’s questions, attendees asked questions using the webinar question-and-answer chat.
