Integrated Vegetation Management on Rights-of-Ways

The United States is home to a vast network of rights-of-ways (i.e., highway, electric, gas) that require vegetation management. This webinar will discuss how integrated vegetation management offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly approach that can significantly enhance pollinator habitats. Participants will learn how to implement different types of cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical control methods along rights-of-ways to attain desired plant composition while protecting pollinators.

Presenter: Dr. John Byrd (Mississippi State University)

Termites: Eating You Out of House and Home?

Buildings that have been infested by drywood and subterranean termites can present structural safety issues and expensive pest remediation issues. This webinar will teach participants how to prevent and identify termite infestations, while still encouraging regular inspections by pest management professionals who can identify the root cause. Experts from the City of New Orleans, LA, will describe the latest termite detection devices, monitoring strategies, and integrated management tactics (i.e., injection treatments, baits, growth regulators and metabolic inhibitors, and fumigation). This webinar will interest homeowners and pest management professionals.

Presenters: Dr. Carrie Cottone (New Orleans Mosquito, Termite & Rodent Control Board), Mark Janowiecki (New Orleans Mosquito, Termite & Rodent Control Board

Managing Troublesome Vines

The encroachment of invasive, weedy vines threatens the ecology of many ecosystems, including rights-of-ways, Tribal lands, and home landscapes. During this webinar, experts will explain how to manage invasive vines like kudzo, mile-a-minute vine, and poison ivy to protect the function of local ecosystems and provide a more suitable habitat for wildlife. This webinar is geared toward foresters and arborists, municipal land managers, grounds managers, and Tribal leaders.

Presenters:  Dr. David Clabo (University of Georgia), Dr. Mark Renz (University of Wisconsin); Ellen Lake (USDA/ARS), Dr. Steven Hart (Langston University)

Identification and Management of Hemlock Pests

Hemlock trees are susceptible to infestation from a variety of pests. In this webinar, participants will learn how to identify pests that endanger hemlocks, including the hemlock wooly adelgid, elongate hemlock scale, rust diseases, hemlock tip blight, and mites. Presenters will discuss abiotic stress issues hemlock trees experience and integrated control tactics that can be implemented to maintain hemlock tree health. These tactics include cultural controls (i.e., practices that discourage pest invasion), chemical controls (i.e., the use of pesticides and biopesticides), and biological controls (i.e., the use of beneficial organisms to manage pests).

Presenters:  Sabrina Tirpak (Rutgers University), Rosa Yoo (New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection)

Invasive Woody Plant Management - Part 3

Attend EPA's upcoming webinar to learn how to manage invasive woody plants such as bamboo, poison oak, poison sumac and autumn olive. These invasive woody plants have the potential to threaten the biology and ecology of ecosystems, so it's important to manage them appropriately. Doing so can improve the function of ecosystems and provide a more suitable habitat for birds and other wildlife.

This webinar is a continuation of our webinar series “Invasive Woody Plant Management.” To view the first two webinars, visit: Upcoming Integrated Pest Management Webinars.

Presenters: Mark Czarnota, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Extension Specialist, University of Georgia |  Rebecca Jacobs, Program Manager, Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District, Maine | Stephen F. Enloe, Ph.D., Professor, Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, University of Florida | Steven Hart, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, American Institute for Goat Research, Langston University

Ticks - Latest in Prevention and Control

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that tick bites are occurring at higher levels than in past years—especially in South Central, Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the United States. During this webinar, CDC discussed how tick populations and emerging tick-borne pathogens are growing in number and geographic range. Experts reviewed tick management strategies, including pesticides, tick repellents, and other personal protection measures.

Presenters: Lars Eisen, Ph.D., Entomologist, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kirby Stafford, Ph.D., Chief Scientist/State Entomologist, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station

Managing Bed Bugs on a Budget

Physical or financial constraints can make it challenging to manage bed bug infestations. This webinar will provide integrated pest management tactics that are readily available and low-cost. Bed bug experts will discuss how to prevent, identify, and manage bed bugs through biological controls (i.e., the use of beneficial organisms), mechanical controls (i.e., the use of physical methods or mechanical devices), and chemical controls (i.e., the use of pesticides).

Presenters: Dr. Changlu Wang (Rutgers University), Dr. Steven Kells (University of Minnesota), Dr. Marcia Anderson (Environmental Protection Agency)

Tree Destroyers: Termites and Carpenter Ants

Subterranean termites, drywood termites, and carpenter ants can damage the structural integrity of trees and homes. During this webinar, experts will explain how to inspect trees and indoor spaces for wood destroying pests, how to identify the type of pest, and how to manage these pests using integrated pest management tactics. Treatment options such as traditional termiticides and newer bait systems will be discussed. This webinar will be of specific interest to arborists, pest management professionals, and homeowners.

Managing Common Indoor Pests: Cockroaches, Rodents, and Fleas

During this event, EPA will re-broadcast three webinars: Rodents – Prevention and Control; Cockroach Allergens, Baits and the Sweet Science of Glucose Aversion; and Fleas – Pet Annoyance and Public Health Threat. Following each webinar, participants can engage in a live Q&A with subject matter experts.

Rodents – Prevention and Control will focus on rodent prevention, monitoring, and management using IPM practices.
Presenters:  Dr. Robert Corrigan (RMC Pest Management Consulting), D. Matt Frye (Cornell University)
Cockroach Allergens, Baits and the Sweet Science of Glucose Aversion will examine cockroach allergens, glucose aversion, and insecticide resistance. Presenters will also discuss the best IPM tactics for controlling cockroaches in homes, schools, and other structures.
Presenter: Dr. Coby Schal (North Carolina State University)
Fleas – Pet Annoyance and Public Health Threat will address health risks posed by fleas. Presenters will also explain how to identify, monitor, and manage fleas using an IPM approach.
Presenters: Dr. Marc Lame (Indiana University), Dr. Edward Wakem (American Veterinary Medicine Association)

Re-Broadcast: Read the Label – Pesticide Label Guidance

A key component of integrated pest management (IPM) is the appropriate use of pesticides. Understanding how to read, interpret and follow instructions on a pesticide label is critical for effective use of a product. This free webinar will provide tips on how to follow labels used for agricultural, antimicrobial, and structural applications for commercial and private applicators. Presenters will also explain how to spot unregistered pesticides and how to understand label components such as toxicity, calibration, dilution, and more. This event is a re-broadcast of last year’s popular webinar that provided insight into how to read and interpret the information provided on pesticide labels and the meaning behind each. A Spanish recording of this training is already available. Following the presentation will be a live question and answer session where you can connect with EPA staff in the Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division, Registration Division and Antimicrobials Division.
