Excluding Pests from Schools

Pests know where to get into buildings – especially in gaps under doors and around windows, pipes and wires. The best way to eliminate pests is to prevent them from entering. Attend this webinar to learn from the experts where pests are entering schools and effective integrated pest management strategies to keep them out. Presenters: Jody Gangloff-Kauffman (Cornell University), Matthew Frey (Cornell University)

Managing Pests of Pines

Both eastern and western white pines are suffering from several pests, including the Eastern pine bark beetle, pine needle scale, white pine aphid and white pine needle blight. Homeowners, utility arborists, park managers and commercial foresters should know how to control these destructive pests. Tree experts will describe these conifer pests and provide methods and resources to maintain healthy pines. Tentative Presenter: Aaron Bergdahl (Maine Forest Service)

Identifying and Managing Toxic Plants

According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, there are five plants in the carrot family (Apiaceae) that you always want to avoid - giant hogweed, wild and cow parsnip, poison and spotted water hemlock, and Queen Anne’s lace. Their sap can cause burns and blindness, resulting in respiratory distress. Learn how to identify these plants, their ranges, and control strategies with an emphasis on their management particularly in rangeland and field crops. Presenter: Dr. Mark Renz (Univ. of Wisconsin)

Updates for Managing the Asian Long-horned Beetle

The Asian Long-horned Beetle is an invasive insect that is harmful to America's hardwood forests. Boring into hardwoods, this invasive insect weakens the trunks of these trees and can lead to their decline. This beetle has spread throughout the U.S. and can damage natural and recreational resources. This webinar will focus on identifying this pest and effective integrated pest management strategies to eradicate it from forested areas.

Fungal Biopesticides: A Growing Option in Pest Control

Many people do not realize that certain fungi are now being used as pesticides to provide selective control of insect pests. These biopesticides are usually inherently less toxic than conventional pesticide and generally affect only the target pest and closely related organisms. This webinar will highlight some of these biopesticides, such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium, and the novel ways in which they are being used to manage important pests, including bed bugs and mosquitoes.

Spotted Lanternfly -Update and Next Steps

The highly invasive spotted lanternfly is a pest of concern for both ornamental plants and agriculture. This voracious leafhopper is migrating from its original infestation area in Pennsylvania toward Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia, damaging trees, ornamental plants and agricultural crops. This webinar will review the environmental and economic challenges of the spotted lanternfly infestation, present the latest data on their range, and discuss ways to prevent and control this pest, particularly in the grape industry. Presenters: Dr. Phillip Lewis (USDA/APHIS), Dr. Michela Centinari (Penn State), Dan Olmstead (NYS Integrated Pest Management)
