LENEXA, KAN. (DEC. 3, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will hold a Public Availability Session and Community Meeting at the Verona High School on Thursday, Dec. 5.

“EPA is committed to keeping the city of Verona updated on public health and environmental matters within their community,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister. “As part of this commitment, EPA and our partner agencies will be available to share information and answer community questions in Verona on Dec. 5.”

At the Public Availability Session, representatives from EPA, Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR), and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) will be available for one-on-one discussions and questions.

The purpose of the session and meeting is to provide an update on EPA’s ongoing community air monitoring efforts and to allow partner agencies to provide updates on their work regarding the BCP Ingredients Inc. facility in Verona. A representative from EPA’s Superfund Division will also be available to answer any questions about the Syntex Facility Superfund Site.

The Public Availability Session will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation to update the community on ethylene oxide monitoring near the BCP Ingredients facility at 6:45 p.m. After the EPA presentation, an open Question-and-Answer Session will be held until 8:15 p.m.

This Community Meeting follows a July 2023 meeting where EPA provided updates on air monitoring studies conducted near the BCP facility. Since 2019, EPA has held meetings with the city of Verona and general public to inform them about health risks associated with ethylene oxide emissions and to provide updates on the groundwater investigation at the Syntex Facility Superfund Site.

The meeting will be held:

Public Availability Session: 6 to 6:30 p.m.
Community Meeting: 6:45 to 7:40 p.m.
Question-and-Answer Session: 7:40 to 8:15 p.m.
