Paterson, N.J. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will start removing asbestos and hazardous materials from the abandoned Allied Textile Printing (ATP) site in Paterson, New Jersey. This cleanup aims to protect the health of nearby residents and visitors, as asbestos exposure can cause serious health issues, including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other cancers. The cleanup work will begin on September 16, 2024, and is expected to take several months to complete.

"EPA is committed to removing any asbestos contamination from this site to protect people who live near the site or will use the nearby recreational areas,” said EPA Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia. “We are grateful for the ongoing cooperation and work with local, state, and federal partners to balance the need for a safe cleanup along with historic preservation considerations. Our goal is to complete this work efficiently and put this property on the path to productive reuse for the City of Paterson.”

The ATP site includes several collapsed structures and a deteriorating smokestack, both containing asbestos. As these structures continue to deteriorate, asbestos could potentially spread, posing a risk to the community’s health. The EPA will secure or remove asbestos and hazardous substances, disposing of them at permitted facilities. The EPA will put in place health and safety protocols, including dust control measures and air quality monitoring, to ensure safety.

The ATP site is part of the Great Falls National Historic Landmark District, and the EPA is committed to preserving historically significant structures and artifacts while conducting the cleanup. The EPA is collaborating with the City of Paterson, the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the National Park Service, and other partners. The EPA will keep the community informed throughout the cleanup process.
