CHICAGO (April 29, 2025) – On Tuesday, May 6, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting to discuss upcoming fieldwork at the Broadway Street Corridor Superfund site in Anderson, Indiana. The EPA will share information about the site’s background and about the Superfund cleanup process from start to finish. Residents can ask questions and share concerns.
When:
Tuesday, May 6 from 5:30–7 p.m.
Where:
Anderson Public Library-Delaware Room
111 E 12th St.
Anderson, Indiana
Background:
In 1992, the city found concentrations of harmful chemicals called chlorinated volatile organic compounds in untreated water in three municipal wells that supply drinking water to residents. The concentrations of these chemicals were at or above the EPA’s drinking water standards established in the Safe Drinking Water Act. The city subsequently installed three air strippers, which are still in use today, to reduce contaminants to levels that met the EPA’s drinking water criteria. At this time, the source of the contamination is unknown. The EPA is currently investigating the source and potential spread of contamination to guide future cleanup work.
More information is available at the Broadway Street Corridor Superfund website.
