Uniform National Discharge Standards (UNDS): Fact Sheet

Section 312(n) of the Clean Water Act (CWA) was added in 1996 to establish the Uniform National Discharge Standards (UNDS).

Section 312(n) of the Clean Water Act requires the EPA and the Department of Defense (DOD) to identify and evaluate discharges of vessels of the Armed Forces to determine which discharges require control for protection of the environment. The EPA and the DOD must set standards for those discharges.
