The 2019 Interim Record of Decision (IROD) for Bonita Peak Mining District (BPMD) is complete as of March 31, 2026. Starting in late 2019 and continuing through the 2025 field season, various mining-reclamation style remedies were implemented at 23 BPMD source-area mines. The completion of the IROD furthers progress on all 3 goals of the Site:
- improving water quality,
- stabilizing solid media,
- and mitigating unplanned release of mining-influenced water.
In October 2024, EPA finalized the first Five-Year Review of the 2019 Interim Record of Decision (IROD), which includes cleanup actions at 23 source areas in the Bonita Peak Mining District. These reviews ensure that the remedies put in place protect public health and the environment, and function as intended by site decision documents. The 2024 Five-Year Review (pdf)(91 pp, 66.14 MB), concluded that the remedy will be protective of human health and the environment once all cleanup actions are complete. EPA expects 2019 IROD cleanup actions to be complete in 2025. The next five-year review of the 2019 IROD is scheduled for Fall of 2029.
