Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in consultation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, is conducting a review of the Lake Sandy Jo Landfill Superfund site (formerly M&M Landfill) located at 3615 W. 25th Ave., Gary, Indiana. The Superfund law requires a review at least every five years at sites where the cleanup is complete and waste is managed on-site to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.

From 1971 to 1980, the site was an operating landfill. Industrial wastes in the landfill and dumped on site contaminated the site soil and sediments with heavy metals. Most of the cleanup was completed in 1994 and the site was partially deleted from the National Priorities List in 2021. Operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.

EPA’s cleanup of contamination at the landfill consisted of capping the landfill with clean soil and planting prairie grasses. EPA also extended the municipal water supply to residents and conducted long-term groundwater monitoring. The 2021 Five-Year Review found that cleanup and restricting access to the property continues to protect people and the environment. This is the seventh five-year review for this site. This next review should be completed by 7/6/2026.

More information will be made available online at the  Gary Public Library, 220 W 5th Avenue, Gary, IN and at Lake Sandy Jo Landfill webpage.

The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
