Summary

EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Auto Ion Chemical, Inc. site in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up or where cleanup has been ongoing for at least five years – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site.

EPA’s cleanup at the site included long-term monitoring of ground water, institutional controls and steps to ensure contaminants remain at level that do not raise concerns about adverse impacts to the Kalamazoo River. Ongoing groundwater monitoring includes measuring water levels and collecting samples for analysis of key chemical parameters two times each year to confirm that concentrations are at acceptable levels and assess trends. Operation and maintenance activities are ongoing.

More information is available at the Auto Ion Chemicals webpage. The review is expected to be completed by September 30, 2026.
