Public Notice: EPA Begins Fifth Review of South Point Plant Superfund Site
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the South Point Plant site near the intersection Old U.S Route 52 and Commerce Drive South Point, Ohio. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up or where cleanup has been ongoing for at least five years – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the fifth five-year review of this site.
EPA’s cleanup at the site consisted of digging up and disposing of waste and contaminated soil at a licensed off-site landfill, consolidating remaining waste under a barrier cover to prevent infiltration of rainwater, pumping out contaminated groundwater, discharging treated groundwater to the Ohio River, long-term monitoring, and limiting the use of and access to the site.
More information is available at the South Point Plant EPA webpage. The review is expected to be completed in early April of 2026.
The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
