Public Notice: EPA Begins Third Review of HIMCO Dump Superfund site
Summary
EPA is conducting the five-year review of the HIMCO Dump Superfund site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure that the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the third review of the site and is expected to be completed February 2026.
EPA’s cleanup of the former landfill included:
- Constructing a cap over the landfill area and planting vegetation.
- Installing a gas management system.
- Monitoring groundwater quality to ensure effectiveness of the cleanup and to evaluate the need for future groundwater treatment.
- Removing all construction debris and rubble from the surface of the CDA and excavating and disposing of contaminated materials in the soil.
- Providing municipal water to 39 residences located east of the landfill and abandoning their existing drinking water wells.
- Placing deed restrictions on the landfill property to limit future land and groundwater use.
