Public Notice: N.W. Mauthe Co., Inc Superfund Site Five-Year Review
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the N.W. Mauthe Superfund site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.
In 1994, EPA and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources signed a Record of Decision, or ROD, which outlines the cleanup plan for the site. The ROD for the N.W. Mauthe site included building demolition, excavation and off-site treatment of soils contaminated with chromium, capping the site with clay, and installation of groundwater collection trenches and a groundwater treatment facility with discharge to the sanitary sewer system. Construction of the remedy finished in 1998.
