Is my fuel produced from renewable biomass?

  • No. You are not eligible for RFS or RIN credits.
  • Yes. Please go to the next box.

Renewable biomass includes:

  • Planted crops and crop residues from existing agricultural land
  • Planted trees and tree residue from tree plantations on non-federal land
  • Animal waste and animal byproducts
  • Slash and pre-commercial thinnings from non-ecologically sensitive forestland
  • Algae
  • Separated yard, food or municipal solid waste including recycled cooking and trap grease

Is my fuel intended for use as a transportation fuel, heating oil or jet fuel in the United States?

  • No. The fuel is not eligible for the RFS.
  • Yes. If you would like to generate RINs you should start the pathway petition process.

  • Transportation fuel means:
    • Fuel for use in motor vehicles, motor vehicle engines, nonroad vehicles, or nonroad engines.
    • It does not include fuel for use in ocean-going vessels

  • Heating oil means:
    • Fuel oil that is sold for use in furnaces, boilers and similar applications and/or that is used to heat interior spaces for human comfort.
    • It does not include jet fuel (defined in §80.2(ddd) as any distillate fuel used, intended for use, or made available for use in aircraft), kerosene, or marine diesel fuel.
