Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to issue an Underground Injection Control (UIC) permit related action, under the authority of the Safe Drinking Water Act and UIC Program regulations, that would authorize Schlage Lock, Inc to operate thirteen (13) Class V injection wells. This is a permit renewal for Schlage Lock, which has been operating the remediation system since the 1980’s in El Paso County, Colorado, which reinjects treated water. The treated water comes from a remediation system used to treat a plume of perchloroethylene (PCE) and nitrates captured from another plume during PCE treatment. This remediation activity is a project under Colorado Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) oversight, which is the primary regulatory agency for the project. The proposed injection zone is the Widefield aquifer, which is found between the surface to at least 105 feet deep at the site.
