EPA Mid-Atlantic: Smart Sectors Program
On this page:
In EPA's Mid-Atlantic Region, the Smart Sectors Program engages with Regional leadership across the land, water, air, and chemical program offices, as well as with national program offices at EPA's headquarters.
At EPA Region 3, the program helps:
- Conduct educational site visits and host roundtables with Regional EPA leadership
- Analyze data and advise on forward-thinking options for environmental improvement
- Maintain meaningful, open dialogue with regional and national trade association partners and their environmental committees
- Develop regional reports, as needed, that profile the impact of each sector on the economy and the environment

Outdoor Recreation/Sports
The Mid-Atlantic is home to a diverse range of outdoor recreation opportunities and thriving economic sectors. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy outdoor pursuits during all four seasons, in activities that include skiing, golf, kayaking, camping, hiking and backpacking, photography, birding, bicycling, equestrian, fishing and hunting, and exploring the miles of coastline within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The outdoor recreation sector in Region 3 employs 417,000 people generating $19.3 billion in wages and salaries and $40.9 billion in value added to GDP (source: Outdoor Industry Association).
The Mid-Atlantic is also home to a sports industry full of passionate and dedicated fans, participants, and organizations. From the professional level down to little league, sports bring communities together and can also serve as an important revenue generator. By partnering with organizations across the industry, EPA can ensure that these groups lead the way in incorporating environmental stewardship and sustainability into their everyday operations.
